Key Takeaways

The six numbers that drive Now Assist pricing

  • Credit packs are the meter. Every Now Assist action consumes credits, and the pack tier locks the unit price.
  • Fulfiller count is the multiplier. Now Assist Pro Plus and Enterprise stack on top of fulfiller licenses, not requesters.
  • The Pro tier is a teaser. Real workflow value lives in Pro Plus and Enterprise SKUs that ServiceNow will not quote until you ask.
  • Credit waste is the silent line. Median customer wastes 38 percent of purchased credits in year one.
  • Renewal uplift is unconstrained. Now Assist credit unit price has no contract level cap unless you negotiate one.
  • Discount math is asymmetric. Volume discount on credit packs is sharper than discount on fulfiller licenses.

ServiceNow released Now Assist in 2023 as a generative AI add on. By 2026 it is the largest single growth line on every ServiceNow account team plan, and the most opaque billing model on the order form. This brief decomposes Now Assist pricing into six lines and shows the buyer side levers on each one.

The benchmarks below come from 60 ServiceNow renewals advised by Redress Compliance in the last twelve months. Every figure is a median across that book. No vendor influence. No ServiceNow partner kickback.

The credit pack math

ServiceNow meters Now Assist in credits. A credit covers one AI action. The unit price of a credit moves with the pack size you buy at signature.

Credit pack tiers and effective unit price

Credit packAnnual creditsList unit priceTypical negotiated price
Starter100,000$0.040$0.032
Growth500,000$0.034$0.025
Enterprise2,000,000$0.028$0.019
Global10,000,000$0.024$0.014
Strategic50,000,000$0.022$0.011

What counts as a credit

  • Summarize an incident. One credit per summary, regardless of length or model size.
  • Generate a knowledge article. Two credits, because the model writes and self reviews.
  • Resolve an HRSD case with chat. Three to five credits depending on conversation turns.
  • Code completion in App Engine. One credit per completion accepted by the developer.
  • Workflow generation in Flow Designer. Five credits per generated flow regardless of complexity.

Fulfiller exposure: the second multiplier

Credits are not the only line. Now Assist Pro Plus and Enterprise also require an active fulfiller license on every user who touches the AI features. ServiceNow does not allow a credit only contract on Pro Plus.

Read the fulfiller line first

The credit pack on the order form looks like the dominant line. On large estates the fulfiller uplift is bigger. A 4,000 fulfiller estate moving from Pro to Pro Plus adds 3.2 million dollars in fulfiller cost before any credit is consumed.

Pro vs Pro Plus vs Enterprise

ServiceNow account teams default to the Pro Plus tier in every Now Assist conversation. The Pro tier is positioned as a starter and the Enterprise tier as a future state. The bundle structure controls what the buyer can compare.

Pro tier capability

  • Incident summarization. The flagship Pro action, useful on mature ITSM estates.
  • Resolution notes generation. A second action that targets agent productivity.
  • Knowledge search rewrite. Lightweight Now Assist for KB retrieval inside Service Portal.
  • No HRSD coverage. Pro stops at ITSM and does not light up HR Service Delivery.

Pro Plus capability

  • HRSD coverage. Now Assist inside the HR portal and case workspace.
  • CSM coverage. Customer Service Management agent workspace integration.
  • App Engine coverage. Code completion and flow generation for developers.
  • Workflow Studio entry. Limited use of the AI workflow designer.

Enterprise capability

  • Full Workflow Studio. Unlimited AI workflow generation across products.
  • AI Control Tower. Governance, prompt library, and audit logging for prompts.
  • Premium models. Access to the higher tier model lineup with higher credit consumption.
  • Custom skills. Bring your own model and prompt template support.

Six pricing traps to expect on the order form

  1. Credit forecast inflation. ServiceNow projects credit usage 2 to 4 times higher than actual customer consumption in year one.
  2. Fulfiller scope creep. Account teams quote Pro Plus for the entire fulfiller pool even when only a subset uses the AI features.
  3. Tier upgrade lock. Mid term moves from Pro to Pro Plus often require a fresh three year term, not a co terminus add.
  4. Credit expiry. Unused credits expire at the contract anniversary unless the renewal explicitly allows rollover.
  5. True up math. Credit overage runs at list rate, not the negotiated unit price, unless capped in the contract.
  6. Discount split. Volume discount applies to credit packs but not to the underlying fulfiller uplift cost.

Track three numbers in month one

Pull the Now Assist usage view weekly. Track three numbers: credits consumed, credits committed, and credits forecast. If forecast still exceeds consumed by 40 percent at month three, the renewal credit pack should be smaller, not larger.

The five renewal leverage points

The biggest discount window on ServiceNow Now Assist is the renewal that follows year one. The customer has real usage data. The account team carries a Now Assist retention quota. The buyer side can use both facts.

Five negotiation levers that work

  • Right size to actual consumption. Anchor the renewal credit pack at year one actual plus 25 percent, not at the year one quote.
  • Cap the unit price. Lock the credit unit price for the contract term with a year over year cap at zero to three percent.
  • Negotiate rollover. Push for quarterly rollover of unused credits inside the contract year.
  • Fulfiller exception list. Carve out fulfillers who never touch Now Assist features and exclude them from Pro Plus.
  • Tier exit clause. Reserve the right to step down from Pro Plus to Pro at renewal without a fresh term.

What to do next

  1. Pull last 90 days of Now Assist usage data from the Performance Analytics workspace.
  2. Map fulfiller pool by product and tag every user who has consumed at least one credit.
  3. Compute the Now Assist credit run rate and project the next twelve months.
  4. Cross check the projection against the ServiceNow account team forecast and identify the variance.
  5. Run the ServiceNow license rightsizing tool on the fulfiller mix.
  6. Download the ServiceNow Renewal Toolkit and align stakeholders.
  7. Engage independent buyer side advisory before the renewal quote arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Is Now Assist Pro enough for most ServiceNow customers?

For ITSM only customers the Pro tier is often the right answer in year one. Pro Plus is required only when HRSD, CSM, or App Engine are in scope. Many customers buy Pro Plus and use only Pro features, which is the largest single source of overspend on Now Assist contracts.

How are Now Assist credits priced?

Credits price in packs ranging from 100,000 to over 50 million per year. The unit price falls as the pack size grows. Negotiated unit prices range from 0.011 to 0.032 dollars per credit depending on volume and renewal posture.

Do unused credits roll over?

By default no. Unused credits expire at the contract anniversary. Rollover inside the contract year is negotiable on renewal with the right account team posture. A buyer side advisor can frame this as a churn risk reduction for ServiceNow.

How does ServiceNow price the underlying fulfiller uplift to Pro Plus?

Pro Plus runs as a percentage uplift on the existing fulfiller license, typically 12 to 18 percent for ITSM, 18 to 25 percent for HRSD, and 22 to 30 percent for CSM. The uplift varies by product and by negotiation posture.

Can the credit unit price be locked across a multi year term?

Yes. The unit price lock is one of the three highest value clauses to negotiate. Without the lock, ServiceNow can raise the unit price at any anniversary by issuing a new price book.

How does Redress engage on ServiceNow Now Assist?

We benchmark your fulfiller and credit pack quote against our 60 deal database, model the year two and year three cost ramp, and sit at the negotiation table with your procurement team. We are not a ServiceNow partner.

ServiceNow does not sell Now Assist by the seat. It sells by credit packs and fulfiller licenses. The two numbers move in opposite directions on renewal.
